Well it’s been a long old 7 weeks so far hasn’t it? I took the decision on day one of lockdown to stop baking for customers; even I, who live and breath cake, just cannot justify the journeys and risks associated with shopping for impossible to find ingredients and cake deliveries. I decided to use the time to learn some new sugar skills and try techniques that I never usually have time for.
First up are succulents, these are very popular with brides at the moment and, I discovered, quite therapeutic to make. For the cake I wanted a washed out wood effect so used a crackled cornflour effect, I hope you like it.
Perhaps the complete opposite to the simple chunky succulents are David Austin roses and dahlia, both large showy flowers with many petals. The vertical frills on this cake compliment the blooms and doesn’t everyone love a bit of sparkle?
